Dr. Edward Bach's History and Background

Dr. Edward Bach was a successful physician and bacteriologist who gained recognition for his work in the conventional medical field. During his years in practice he questioned why some of his patients would recover while other patients with the same illness and treatment protocol would remain ill. He observed that the only difference between these patients was their outlook on life. He found that the patients who were hopeless would inevitably suffer relapses and that the positive or happy patients would recover and stay well. He became dissatisfied with the treatment the patients were offered, when he saw that only the body or disease was being treated, while the patient himself was still in a terrible psychological or emotional state. These years treating patients through the conventional modes of medicine were invaluable in his development as a healer and in his discoveries of his flower remedies.

Dr. Bach's Philosophy

Dr. Bach believed that chronic illness, not caused by genetics or physical injury, is the last and final manifestation of a prolonged imbalance between the soul and the personality.

He believed that if you treat this emotional imbalance in a person, the body has a greater chance for healing. His vision was to find a system of medicine which empowered people to heal themselves.

(One of his great writings is called "Heal Thyself." I highly recommend it).

Physical Illness

Bach Flower Therapy can be considered preventative medicine in that it aims to treat emotional imbalances before they can go deeper into the body.

Bach flower remedies have been known to treat certain complaints which are believed to have an emotional component, such as migraines, back pain, allergies, fatigue and eczema.

Once emotional balance is restored, the body no longer reacts to the emotional stressors with physical symptoms.

A new kind of diagnosing

The remedies can be taken in any combination and are given according to the mood and personality of the patient, never for the physical complaint.

While there may be three people, all suffering from migraines, they may all be prescribed a different remedy based on their personality and outlook on life.

A new way of looking at illness

We have all been raised with the idea that if something is wrong, it must be eradicated or suppressed. We take antibiotics, anti depressants, ant-acids etc. 'Anti' means against, and this is a common philosophy we are raised with…to fight against illness.

To understand how flower remedies work, we must change our perspective a little. Rather than suppressing a negative quality, they work by encouraging the positive aspects of our personalities. When we are restored to the positive and happy people we are capable of being, the negative symptoms just leave.

For example, the remedy holly is given for hatred and jealousy. When we take holly, it works, not by fighting against these strong negative emotions but by cultivating within us the virtues of compassion and love, in the presence of which jealousy and hatred can no longer exist and they simply melt away.

The Goal

The ultimate aim of this system of healing is happiness and peace of mind. By aligning the soul and the personality, the flowers help us to live our lives in the way we were meant to, fulfilling our purpose with love, happiness and freedom from all the limiting influences we may encounter along the way.
